Defiance Chapter 4The runner from Fort Aquila was a scrawny little twist, with a rat face and beady little eyes. His voice was high pitched and nearly trembled as he said: “Commander Etzal has ordered a high alert. Your garrison must be placed on high alert and muster for war! An attack on Fort Aquila seems imminent.”
Roxar remained quiet, giving himself and his subordinates a chance to consider this new information. They had long anticipated another invasion, but for Etzal to call for reinforcements meant it was serious. Roxar had known Etzal's name even before he was posted to Defiance. After all, it had been Etzal who stopped the last great attack on Fort Aquila, albeit with terrible damage to the defenses.
Doctor Venom was the first to speak up. “Captain, our earlier discussions included suspicions that we may come under attack soon. I don't think it would be wise to abandon our own position to march for Fort Aquila. If Fort Defiance is left undefended our enemies will have a clear
Defiance Chapter 3“Gentlemen, thank you for coming.” Roxar was sitting in the war room of the Fort, a large room with a massive round table. With him sat Doctor Venom and the Quartermaster, plus some of the more capable Sergeants.
“We have made good progress so far in the reorganisation of this Fort. However, we still have some remaining issues. For one, we lack an officer for 3rd company. Secondly I am concerned that our scouting missions have been largely unsuccessful recently. Even the feral mutants haven't been sighted in a while. This leads me to believe that there must be something scaring them away.”
After a moments pause he continued. “Thirdly I believe it is time we sent a runner to Fort Aquila and see how they're doing. It's been a while since we had any contact with the other commanders around here, so I would like to introduce myself.”
Most of the Sergeants avoided his gaze. Amongst the twist Roxar was an imposing sight. He stood tall amongst them, and wit
Defiance Chapter 2“How in the name of the Emperor could this happen to me!” Roxar roared, collapsing to his knees and clasping his face with his hands in an attempt to hide his hideous mutation.
“Sometimes mutations can stay dormant before manifesting themselves. You've always had the necessary genetic defects, but they hadn't shown their effects yet. Stress and exposure to higher levels of radiation can cause them to trigger.” The Doctor laid one of his many hands on the fallen man's shoulder, trying to comfort him.
“It seems the Emperor decided that he didn't like the look of my Tarot, so he dealt me a new hand.” He looked up at the Doctor, his mutant eyes wet with tears. “Why did this happen to me? I was already dead when I was ordered to this undermanned, under supplied and completely hopeless death-trap of a fort.” Roxar started to bang his head against the mirror in front of him, sobbing and raging against his fate.
The Doctor suddenly grabbed him, s
Defiance Chapter 1/Trouble on the Border“Why did I open my Emperor-damned mouth? I could have sat nice and safe in Pending, but no! I had to go and defend some fucking twists in front of my commanding officer.” Captain Roxar Fredrickson (formerly Sargent Fredrickson just two weeks ago) was slowly getting used to his fate. That is, being the newly appointed commander of Fort Defiance, and thus effectively already dead.
Two weeks ago he'd been a Sargent in Fort Pending, the grand capital of the shithole known as the District of Alutia. He had been on a regular scavenging mission in the ruins around Pending, or what was left of them. Time and nuclear Armageddon had destroyed most of the District quite nicely. A normal mission had ended in the usual worthless scraps and the usual scraps that were the worthless corpses of his squad mates. Only this time one of the more capable twists had survived. Or rather he would have with the proper medical care.
“Sir, this man needs urgent medical attention. He'll die other
